Overview |
The mission of the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts is to provide artistic, aesthetic and cultural experiences and training for selected sophomores and juniors in the areas of visual art (including photography), creative writing, dance, music and theater. Further, the school provides students with opportunities for artistic growth in creative and/or re-creative studio activity, and in the areas of aesthetics and criticism within a historical context. Living and learning in an environment that replicates an artists' colony, students are led to understand how they may be of service to the cause of the arts in general, and to their communities and schools in particular. Through these experiences, the program provides students with a more informed basis upon which to assess their individiual commitment to artistic endeavors, and to help them determine the role that artistic activity might play in their futures. |

Costs and Commitment |
All classes and activities take place on the campus of Mercyhurst College in Erie which offers excellent facilities for all arts disciplines. Field trips provide additional access to arts resources in the tri-state area. Students live in supervised, gender-separate residence halls. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania provides tuition, room, board, instructional materials and program activities for all participants. Families are responsible for transportation to and from the program, pocket money, a residential life deposit that is refunded if all conditions are met, and for damages not covered by the deposit. Students must remain in residence for the full 35-day program, including weekends. They are expected to arrive promptly for all classes and activities. There is some unscheduled time nearly every day for personal use, but the Governor's School cannot provide special facilities or alter schedules for formal athletic training or other commitments unrelated to the program. |

Selection Process |
The selection process for the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts is two-tiered. The first level takes place at the intermediate unit serving the region in which the student's family resides on a full-time basis. The intermediate unit assembles a judging panel consisting of professionals with experience in each art form. |
